Installing a 1x1 split air conditioner costs between 220 and 300 € in labour on the 2026 market, with up to 3 metres of line, and between 550 and 1,500 € with a 2.5 to 3.5 kW unit included. Each extra metre of line adds 20-30 €. These are rough guide ranges, not our rates.

Below you'll see where each number comes from and, above all, what can make a quote double.

One warning before we start: the price you see in the shop is for the unit. Installation is always extra, and it has to be done by an authorised company. This isn't red tape; we explain why further down.

How much does it cost to install a split air conditioner?

We always separate two things: the unit and the labour. For the unit and the working time we use the CYPE Generador de Precios, the price database architects and builders use to cost work in Spain. Note that its figures are direct cost, before VAT and without the installer's margin. They are the technical floor, not what you will pay.

The most common real-world case: a 2.5-3.5 kW split for a bedroom or a small living room, with the outdoor unit on the balcony a few metres away. That is the cheap case. When the balcony is at the other end of the flat, or the unit goes on the roof, the same machine can cost twice as much to install.

Ducted from scratch is a different story: the unit is hidden above the hallway or bathroom, and if there is no space, you have to lower the ceiling with plasterboard (pladur) for the ducts. That ceiling is quoted separately.

If you want a fixed number for your case, send us a photo of the wall where the indoor unit will go and of the outdoor spot: ask for an air conditioning quote.

What power do I need? Frigorías and kW by room size

Before talking about installation, you need the right unit. One that is too small always runs flat out and never gets there; one that is too big switches on and off all the time and uses more electricity.

The OCU explains how to work out the power (the OCU is Spain's main consumer organisation) with a simple formula: power in watts = 45 × width × length × height of the room. A 3 × 4 metre bedroom with a 2.5 metre ceiling is 30 m³, which times 45 gives 1,350 W. It also gives this rough table:

Floor area Power (kW) In frigorías/hour
10-20 m² 1.2-2.3 kW 1,030-1,980
20-30 m² 2.3-3.4 kW 1,980-2,920
30-50 m² 3.4-5.7 kW 2,920-4,900

The conversion is also from the OCU: 1 kW = 860 frigorías/hour. Spanish shops still advertise a lot of units in frigorías (the Spanish unit for cooling capacity), so it's handy to know.

Go up a size if the room faces west, is a top-floor flat (ático), has big windows or a higher ceiling than normal. In practice, the smallest home splits are around 2-2.5 kW, so for a normal bedroom you rarely need to think much harder.

What pushes the price up: metres of line, pre-installation and height

Every metre of line between the indoor and outdoor units is paid for: between 20 and 30 € on the market from the third metre on.

Basic labour assumes an easy job: the outdoor unit close by and the route for the pipes already in place. Anything beyond that costs extra.

The metres of line. The refrigerant line is two insulated copper pipes linking the indoor and outdoor units, plus the cable and the drain. Almost everyone includes 3 metres; beyond that it is charged per metre, between 20 and 30 € on the market. CYPE puts a metre of twin line at 22 € of direct cost. With the outdoor unit 8 metres away, that is already 100-150 € more.

The pre-installation. If the pipes were built into the walls when the flat was built or renovated, installation means hanging and connecting. If not, there are two routes: drill through the wall and run the line outside in trunking, which is the cheap option, or chase the walls and bury it, which is building work (about 300 € per split just for the pre-installation).

Where the outdoor unit goes. On the balcony floor or on a bracket at arm's height, no problem. On the façade, in a light well (patio de luces) or on the roof, it may need scaffolding, rope access or a platform, and that is quoted separately.

The drain. The indoor unit drips condensation water. If there is no drain nearby, either the water is piped to one or a condensate pump is fitted. Ask how they'll handle it. If the unit is already fitted and water is dripping inside the flat, the “air con is dripping water” check helps you tell whether it's the drain or something more serious.

The electrics. A home split goes into a socket or onto its own circuit depending on its power. If a new circuit has to be run from the fuse box (cuadro eléctrico), that is extra too.

Who is allowed to install an air conditioner?

Gloved hands connecting the gauge manifold hoses to the service valve of an outdoor air conditioning unit
Vacuuming and leak testing before the gas is opened. Only someone with the fluorinated gas certificate can do this work.

Not just anyone, and this is not a minor detail.

Splits contain fluorinated refrigerant gas. Royal Decree (Real Decreto) 115/2017, in article 3, says only staff with the fluorinated gas handling certificate may install and service this equipment, and that the certificate does not qualify anyone on its own: they have to work within an authorised company (empresa habilitada). The same decree, in article 9, requires whoever sells you the unit to tell you this in a document, and requires you to show afterwards that an authorised company installed it.

In plain terms: the friend who “knows about this stuff” and fits it for you on a Saturday leaves you with a unit installed outside the law and without the document the decree says you must have. And if it later loses gas, the repair still has to be done by an authorised company.

Is there paperwork with the regional government (Generalitat)? For almost all home splits, no. The Regulation on Thermal Installations in Buildings (RITE), in article 15, says that below 5 kW of power you don't have to file a project or technical report with the regional authority. Above 5 kW a technical report is needed. If you are fitting a large ducted system for the whole flat, ask who signs it.

What VAT applies to installing air conditioning: 10 or 21%?

Almost always 21%.

Repair and renovation work in a private home can be charged at 10% VAT (IVA), but only if the materials the professional supplies do not exceed 40% of the taxable base. That is in the Agencia Tributaria FAQ on building work and repairs (Spain's tax agency), which uses the example of replacing a boiler: the appliance is over that 40% and the whole invoice goes at 21%. With a 900 € split and 300 € of labour, exactly the same happens.

The rule that saves you surprises: always ask for the total price including VAT, in writing. Many installation prices are advertised without VAT and the 21% shows up later.

Removing, moving or replacing an old unit

If you're moving house, renovating or swapping an old unit for a new one, there are three cases:

  • Remove and dispose of: 80-120 € per unit on the market. The gas has to be recovered before the pipes are disconnected; venting it is banned.
  • Remove and refit somewhere else: 180-300 € per unit. If the old line is no good or gas is missing, that is added on.
  • Swap the unit for a new one in the same place: sometimes the line can be reused if its diameter suits the new unit and it is in good condition. That is the installer's call, not the shop's.

If your current unit isn't cooling much and you don't know whether it's worth replacing, first try our air con not cooling check: often it's the filters or a dirty outdoor unit, not the machine itself. And if it really is short of gas, what the top-up and the leak behind it cost is in how much it costs to recharge air conditioning gas. And to make the new unit last, the yearly service is covered in how much air conditioning maintenance costs.

Price in Valencia and when to install

In Valencia, labour prices for a 1x1 split sit in the same range as the rest of Spain, 220-300 €. What changes is the time of year.

From May to July everyone wants air con at the same time. Diaries fill up, and whoever can fit you in within three days is the one who has a free slot, not necessarily the one with the best price. In autumn and winter it is easier to get a date and compare without rushing. And since almost all splits are heat pumps, the unit you install in October heats your living room in January.

Two local things to keep in mind: in many buildings an outdoor unit on the façade needs approval from the owners' association (comunidad de propietarios), so ask the building administrator before you buy; and in older flats without pre-installation, the line almost always runs outside in trunking.

Get a fixed price before buying the unit

At Octo Service we agree a fixed price in writing before any work starts. You send us a photo of the wall where the indoor unit will go, of the spot for the outdoor unit and of the route between the two, and we tell you what the installation costs, with the metres of line counted. The work is done by an independent professional who works with us and holds the fluorinated gas certificate, in Valencia city and the towns of l'Horta.

Questions and answers

What people ask us about this before getting a quote. If your question isn’t here, message us on WhatsApp.

How much is the labour to install a split unit?

Between 220 and 300 € for a 1x1 split with up to 3 metres of pipe run, on the 2026 market, as a guide and not our rates. The CYPE price database counts 2 hours of a tradesperson and an assistant, about 98 € of direct cost before VAT; the difference is the call-out fee, vacuuming the line, commissioning and the company's margin.

How many frigorías do I need for my room?

The OCU suggests multiplying the room's volume by 45 to get the watts: a 3 × 4 metre bedroom 2.5 high gives 1,350 W. In its table, 10 to 20 m² needs 1.2-2.3 kW, 20 to 30 m² 2.3-3.4 kW and 30 to 50 m² 3.4-5.7 kW. One kW is 860 frigorías.

How much does each extra metre of refrigerant line cost?

On the market it is 20 to 30 € per metre beyond the 3 that are usually included. CYPE puts a metre of insulated twin copper line at 22 € of direct cost before VAT. If the outdoor unit is far away, ask for the quote to say how many metres they expect, not just the price per metre.

How much does it cost to remove and refit an air conditioner?

Just removing a split costs around 80-120 €, and removing it to refit it somewhere else, 180-300 € per unit, on the 2026 market. The gas is pumped down into the outdoor unit before the pipes are disconnected; releasing it into the air is banned. If pipework needs replacing or the gas topping up, that is extra.

Who is allowed to install an air conditioner?

An authorised company (empresa habilitada) with staff who hold the fluorinated gas handling certificate. That is what Royal Decree 115/2017 says: the personal certificate is not enough on its own, the work has to be done within an authorised company, and the shop that sells you the unit has to tell you about this obligation in writing.

What VAT applies to installing air conditioning?

Almost always 21%. The 10% rate for work on homes requires the materials the professional supplies to stay within 40% of the taxable base, and the unit on its own already goes over that limit. The Agencia Tributaria gives the same example with a boiler. Always ask for the total including VAT.

When is it cheaper to install air conditioning?

Out of season. From May to July everyone wants air con at the same time and diaries fill up, so in autumn and winter it is easier to get a date and agree a price without rushing. A unit with a heat pump also works as heating, so installing it in October is not money wasted.
